TWO ROUNDS, NO WINNER: OFORIKROM PRESIDING MEMBER ELECTION

The General Assembly of the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly on Thursday, February 19, failed to elect a Presiding Member after a re-run of voting held at Banisvillas, with none of the candidates securing the constitutionally required two-thirds majority.

Three contestants, Hon. Richard Nyarko, Hon. Joshua Ofori and Hon. Hopeson Keku, vied for the position during the election.

In the first round of voting, the incumbent Presiding Member, Hon. Richard Nyarko, secured 14 votes, while Hon. Joshua Ofori obtained 7 votes and Hon. Hopeson Keku polled 1 vote. However, none of the candidates attained the required two-thirds majority of 16 votes needed to be declared winner.

A re-run was subsequently conducted between the two leading candidates. In the second round, Hon. Richard Nyarko garnered 15 votes, with Hon. Joshua Ofori maintaining his 7 votes. Despite the re-run, neither candidate met the two-thirds threshold.

The Oforikrom Electoral Commission Director, Madam Matilda Kwarteng, who supervised the process, declared that no winner could be announced as the constitutional requirement had not been met. She stated that the General Assembly would be reconvened within the next 14 days to conduct another election to choose a Presiding Member.
