WORLD MENSTRUATION DAY: STUDENTS LEARN HEALTHY MENSTRUAL PRACTICES

The Social Development Department of the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly on Tuesday, June 2, held the “World Menstruation Day” at the Church of Pentecost auditorium at Kentinkrono-Nsenie to educate students on menstrual hygiene and moral values.

The programme brought together students of Weweso Basic School, Headteachers, Teachers, Health Officers from the Oforikrom Municipal Health Directorate, officials from the Social Development Department led by their Head of Department, and the Information Services Department of the Assembly.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Caroline Akosah Nkrumah, a health officer at the Municipal Health Directorate, educated the students on menstrual hygiene and the importance of maintaining personal cleanliness before, during, and after menstruation. She explained that menstruation affects individuals differently and urged boys to be supportive of girls during their menstrual periods.

“Menstruation comes with symptoms and challenges, but these are not the same for everyone. Every individual experience different level of discomfort and cramps,” she said.

Mrs. Abena Oforiwaa, an Assistant Health Officer, demonstrated the proper use and disposal of sanitary pads. She carefully took the students through each step and advised them to change their sanitary pads regularly and maintain good personal hygiene by bathing twice daily to prevent bacterial infections, rashes, and unpleasant odour.

The Social Development Department Director, Mrs. Mary Serwaa Adjen, emphasized the importance of good behaviour and moral discipline among students. She advised them to avoid negative influences that could affect their future success.

“If you want to be successful in the future, you should avoid bad company, early sexual activities, drug abuse, laziness, and other negative behaviours,” she said.

During the question-and-answer session, students actively participated by asking relevant questions, which were answered by the municipal officials.
