The Justice and Security Sub-Committee of the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly embarked on a rigorous inspection of gaming and betting centers within the municipality today, October 16, 2023, to ensure compliance with the Gaming Act, 2006 (Act 721).

The operation also aimed to verify the possession of Business Operating licenses and fire certificates, with a specific focus on the centers’ adherence to safety regulations. The targeted gaming and betting centers included Soccerbet at Oforikrom and Tech Junction, Obese Gaming Center at Bomso, Baba Jamal Gaming Center at Ayeduase, and Premier Bet at Kotei.

Upon inspection, the committee uncovered various infractions, raising concerns about the compliance of these establishments with existing regulations. Several centers were found to be operating without the requisite Business Operating Permit (BOP), while others had failed to renew their permits. Many of them lacked the mandatory fire certificate from the KNUST Fire Service Station with non-functional fire extinguishers further worsening the safety concerns.

In response to these alarming findings, the committee promptly issued a stern warning to the operators of these betting centers. They were urged to promptly obtain or renew their business operating permits and secure fire licenses to bring their establishments in line with the law to avoid penalties.

The inspection team comprised the Convener, Hon. Kenneth Owusu Bediako, along with other Committee Members. Additionally, officers from the KNUST Fire Service Station and Bomso Police Station were present to ensure thorough and accurate assessments of the gaming and betting centers’ compliance with regulations. The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Coordinator also participated in the operation to ensure the safety of the public in the event of any unforeseen incidents.

The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly’s proactive actions underscore its commitment to safeguarding public interests and maintaining the integrity of gaming and betting centers within the municipality. This operation serves as a reminder to all gaming and betting operators to comply with the law and prioritize the safety of their patrons.
