The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly commemorated the World Food Safety Day at the Onion Market, Anloga in the municipality on Monday, August 21, 2023.
The programme which was carried out in collaboration with the Food and Drugs Authority- Ashanti Regional Office was to educate the market women on the implications of selling spoilt produce especially onions to people for consumption.
The exercise became necessary as trucks loaded with onions kept at the borders of neighbouring countries due to the military coup in Niger returned rotten. Unfortunately, these rotten onions have found their way into our local markets and traders due to the price hicks are selling these rotten onions to avoid losing out.
Speaking on the theme; “Food Standards, Save Lives”, the Public Relations Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority, Mr. Daniel Gerado, advised the onion sellers on the need to dispose of these rotten onions from the market to prevent causing harm to consumers.
The Environmental Health Officer, Mr. Prince Kwaku Duah also reiterated the importance of the market women to ensure that safety food is sold out to consumers. He also addressed the need to keep the environment clean to deter and prevent contracting diseases.
In attendance were the Municipal Environmental Health Officers, Madam Constance Akuka, Mr. Samuel Baah and the Regulatory Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority, Madam Serwaa Addai.
