The Oforikrom Municipal Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Veterinary Services Directorate, has conducted a free mass anti-rabies vaccination exercise for dogs and other susceptible animals across the municipality.
The official launch of the programme, held on Monday, September 28, 2026, formed part of activities commemorating World Rabies Day under the theme “Stronger Together.”
Vaccination points were established at the Chief Palace at Boadi, Hospital at Emena, Information Centre at Deduako, Roman School at Kotei and Methodist School Park at Ayeduase.
The exercise was also extended to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where animals were vaccinated at the Vice-Chancellor’s Guest House and the senior and junior staff apartments and bungalows near the Botanical Garden entrance.
Veterinary personnel used the exercise to engage animal owners on the importance of regular anti-rabies vaccination and safe handling of domestic animals.
Rabies is a viral disease that affects mammals and can be transmitted to humans mainly through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Although the disease is preventable, it is fatal once clinical symptoms develop. Vaccination of dogs and other susceptible animals remains an important measure for reducing the risk of transmission.
Residents were advised to promptly report animal bites and scratches and seek medical attention following exposure, while the animals involved should be reported to veterinary authorities for appropriate action.
The Department of Agriculture said the activities were aimed at improving public awareness and increasing community participation in efforts to control rabies within the municipality.
The observance brought together veterinary officials, animal owners, schools and communities in support of efforts to safeguard public health and animal welfare
