The Appiadu R/C School in the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly under the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Sanitation and Water Project, gets two state-of-the-art 11-seater water closet facility.
The Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Project is a government of Ghana initiative through the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources with funding from the World Bank with the objective to increase access to improved sanitation and water supply with emphasis on low-income communities and to strengthen management of environmental sanitation in the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area.
The contract for the construction of these modern toilet facilities, which was awarded to the Fenabam Construction Company in January 2023, is part of a broader initiative to construct 12 similar 11-seater water closet and renovate two existing toilets within the municipality.
In a short final inspection and handover ceremony, the project engineer, Mr. David Mantey Mills stated that the two facilities are equipped to meet the diverse needs of students and teachers for both the primary and the Junior High School (JHS). Adding that, the facility features four squat plates for male and female students each, along with separate facilities for male and female teachers and most importantly a disability-friendly water closet, demonstrating commitment to inclusivity.
In addition, the female students will benefit from a dedicated changing room to address their needs during menstrual periods, emphasizing the importance of gender-sensitive infrastructure. Both facilities have a borehole attached to it with a water reservoir to help ensure constant supply of water to the facility.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Abraham Antwi addressing the media explained that the project is in two-folds; the household toilets and the institutional toilet project. He stated that more than one thousand individual households have already benefited from this initiative within the municipality
Hon. Antwi commended the Fenabam Construction Company for their exemplary diligence in executing the project. He however called on members of the community and the students’ body to help maintain the beautiful facility so that it continues to serve its purpose.
The Municipal Education Director, Mrs. Dorothy Opare Baidoo responding to issue of maintenance mentioned that, the Parent-Teacher Association have agreed to provide toilet rolls, detergents as well as hire the services of a janitor to help keep the facility clean.
The Assembly Member for the Electoral Area, Hon. Kenneth Owusu Bediako was thankful to the MCE, the Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Marfo and government for choosing Appiadu as a beneficiary community in this laudable initiative that responds to the needs of his constituents.
